Film Opening: Feedbacks

Throughout the process of production, we received a lot of comments and feedback from Mr Nick as well as from each other. In this blog spot, I will compile the comments we received. One was taken from Maxi’s blog while the others are written by me (Nay).

This will start from the first draft video play.

Note: I will refer to our editor as Timo and our young Hazel as Timothy.

3rd March (First Draft) written by: Maxi

Timo had finished the first draft of the film and from that, we as a team gave feedback along with our teacher Mr Nick. Some scenes needed a bit of pace-changing, including the credits scene, and some transitions. Timo also experimented with adding a filter in the first shot, which made it look like it was shot from an old film camera. We decided this looked unprofessional, and told him to change it. Some scenes like the teacher telling Hazel to stop playing the piano also needed to be edited as he was meant to be initially out of focus, and then move into focus, which Timo hadn't done yet. As well as when the teacher starts the class, the ambient noise of students talking in the background suddenly disappeared, which we told him to keep - but just slowly fade out as the teacher keeps talking. Some lines were also cut out, including Harmony's "I love going to parks, reading books..." line, which we all agreed should be included to better the overall flow of the opening.  Hopefully, by the next draft, all these issues will be mitigated.

9th March (Second Draft) written by: Nay

Timo finished the second draft after editing to match the feedback given from the first draft. Both Mr Nick and the team gave more feedback and comments to ensure top quality. Mr Nick suggested getting rid of black screens between Hazel sitting down and Mr Ben standing up as in his opinion it doesn’t work well so Timo will experiment on that to see what is best. For Hazel’s head-turning part, we caught on a small time detail that messes up the continuation hence Timo will have to push back some scenes by a few seconds to improve the continuity. We also realized for the mother scene at the beginning, the audio is very loud so he will have to change the audio level for Ms Lala’s scenes. The lighting in some of the teacher’s scene is also very white and cool which contrast with the warm tone of other scenes so to fix that, Timo will attempt to color grade Mr Ben. During the names of actors, the text of Timothy Mulia is not right as it got cut off so he will have to fix up the text alignment for Timothy Mulia.

30th March (Final Video) written by: Nay

As we posted the final opening on YouTube, there were a lot of comments we received from Mr Nick. Through our discussion and re-watch, we found that the audio for home scenes was a bit messy because of the birds so we might have to do an audio reshoot to fix that issue or an alternative to trim between audios to match it up. The text alignment of the actors can also be fixed to be more in. The flow between the book open and close cut also wasn't well so Timo might have to experiment with that. The sound volume level also needed to be fixed; all school scenes were too loud, the piano scene in school was too loud, the dialogue of "yea sorry" was too loud, the footsteps effect was too loud, second Hazel dialogue when the teacher calls out was too loud as well. The background noise in school scenes also needed to be erased; cut it when the teacher shout (dead silent then when he walks to his seat fades in sound), and erase it when the teacher calls Harmony to walk in. The brightness when teen Hazel close-up scene when Harmony talks should also be tone down.

Film Opening: Development

In this development, we discuss film opening details, the filming process, and typeface development. This is all written by Nayana.

Film Opening Names

We had a few names in mind which includes:

  1. Liebestraume
  2. Harmony
  3. A reignited Harmony
  4. Reignite
  5. Perfect Imperfections
  6. A Musical Match
  7. The First Verse
  8. The Duet
  9. Two Halves make a Whole
  10. Moonlight Sonata

These titles all convey a sense of passion, connoting romance, and also incorporate subtle hints that music will play a role in the film.

Moonlight Sonata was our final choice; we chose this as our title as moonlight is commonly connoted with subjects of love and romance. While a sonata often is a long song that tells a story. Furthermore, Moonlight Sonata is a well-known song that may attract audiences that have an interest in music/more specifically, classical music

Filming Process

Pictures of Behind The Scene can be found here

Timothy as mentioned, is the video producer and editor which means he is in charge of the majority of our production. He prepared all equipment needed for filming (camera, lighting, sound) through rent or things that are already his. We decided to split the whole filming into 3 days:
- Friday, February 10th in school
- Saturday, February 11th in Maxi’s house
- Sunday, February 12th in Maxi’s house

Day 1

Starting on Friday, during our media class we prepared the setting and the equipment and revamped a classroom to be our music room as we found the actual music room to not be suitable for the shoot.

After setting everything up, we tried to do some mock shots to be used as reference later on using our phone, and from then we discuss on what to change and what to not change.

In the actual shoot, we also experimented with the actual shots to reach a variety. We didn’t follow the screenplay as strictly to see if there were any more types of angles that could possibly not be in the screenplay, this includes:
- Teacher yelling for Hazel while sitting down and standing up
- Shots focusing solely on Hazel’s hands playing the piano

After around possibly 70 takes, our first day of the shoot is over and all the actors did a great job and were really cooperative.

Day 2

On the second day of the shoot, our main goal is to tackle all the scenes with younger Hazels.
Our day starts at 11, with us setting and revamping Maxi’s living room and changing the furniture set up to make sure it fits with what we want and need. We moved a lot of stuff, from the things on top of the piano, around the piano to the sofa.

After we set everything up, we went on a little brief of what we are doing, hence we started from the youngest Hazel’s scenes to the second Hazel.

We did a lot of shots and experiments and trials for all scenes, even those that we don’t plan nor write in the storyboard/screenplay. We made sure to get more than enough shots so that during the editing, Timo can try some stuff.

After multiple takes and reshoots, our second day is over, and big applause for the kids who were our young Hazels and worked together seamlessly.

Day 3

On our last day of the shoot, we just had to finish the rest of the shoot which was just a few scenes with Danny (Hazel) and Ms Lala (mother).

For this shoot, we experimented a lot with the costume of the mother. Some things we did were using baby powder on her hair to create fake white hair to indicate her age and layering her outfit to make it more structured and shaped. For Danny, we just did a simple, formal outfit with a white button-up and long pants with an image of it being a competition outfit.

We had an issue during this shoot for the final parts, our camera stabilizer died and stopped working. So we had to improvise and worked with a lot of prayers so it lasted through the shoot. We also focused a lot on the match cut of our opening so Timothy was very detailed about the positioning of the actor so it lines up as perfectly as possible.

Typeface Development

For the credit text typeface, we used a combination of typeface IBM Plex Serif as the names as well as DejaVu Serif for the roles

Our research of fonts movies of the genre “teen romance” uses

We started researching and developing the typeface for the title card as well as the credit text. We opted for a serif font to show a more classy and elegant touch to the title. We also chose to have a highlight neon-like effect surrounding the title to symbolize the “moonlight” of the moonlight sonata. We took the “Black Swan” movie font as inspiration.
I found out the font they used for Black Swan is very similar to the typeface Trajan Regular hence I experimented with that.

But after some discussion, we tried other fonts as well in Canva.

Film Opening: Concept Brainstorm

Here we had few ideas of our film movie opening. We discussed 3 different concepts and see which one would fit our want the most hence we came down to Moonlight Sonata. This is brainstormed by the team and written and expanded by Maxi.

STAGE 1: INITIAL CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

CONCEPT 1

LOVESICK

Genre: Romance/Drama

Audience: 16-40 y.o, both woman and men

Note: This initial concept has been inspired by openings such as Whiplash (2014) and The Dark Knight (2008), the Dark Knight specifically led us to making one of the most climatic sequences of the film be put at the very beginning, while Whiplash inspired the confrontational style meeting between the 2 main characters at the very start of the film.

Synopsis

Adam (Arjuna Nakao) is a shell of a man. After a devastating breakup with his girlfriend of 2 years Jess (Jasmine Riadi), it seems like Adam’s life has spiraled into a dark abyss. The hole in his heart creates an unending void, and as he tries to fill that void with a life of debauchery and excess, his life slowly begins to lose meaning. That is until a woman named Alex unexpectedly barges into his life.

Lovesick is a story of heartbreak, depression, pain, but most importantly; it is a story of how one’s struggles are not forever - it is a story of recovery.

OPENING CREDITS (2 MINUTES TOTAL) - SCREENPLAY

SCENE 1:

SETTING: Empty room in an office building

COSTUME(s): Semi formal - work attire

Scene starts with a close up of Adam’s face and eyes; with sweat running down his face and a nervous expression taking over his being. It is clear he’s done something wrong

Shot 2

Scene cuts to a medium-close up shot from behind of Jess walking frantically down a hallway, while camera tracks her, from behind. Then cuts to a shot of her face, still walking, while the camera is still tracking, however more shakily (to convey the unsteady state of mind she is currently in). It's clear she's angry,

Shot 3

Scene cuts to a medium close up of Jess from behind as she slams open the door to Adam’s room, tracking her as she goes in. Then cuts to a shot of her from inside the room - as she continues to walk towards Adam’s desk, with the camera still tracking her. Then cuts to a still close up of Adam with his head looking towards the ground, leaning against the side of a wall. Cuts back to over the shoulder shot of Jess, as she yells at Adam.

JESS:

Who the HELL do you think you are? Firstly, you lie to me, secondly you cheat on me with SARAH WALKER OF ALL PEOPLE, and NOW you’re saying that YOU’RE the one breaking up with ME?

Cuts to over the shoulder shot of Adam

ADAM:

Look, Jess, please, let me explain-

Cuts to over the shoulder shot of Jess

Cuts to over the shoulder shot of Jess

JESS:

Jesus Christ Adam that was MONTHS AGO HAVE WE NOT GONE OVER THIS AGAIN AND AGAIN? [rubs hand over her face in frustration] YOU ARE THE BIGGEST ASSHOLE I'VE EVER MET!

Cuts to over the shoulder shot of Adam

ADAM:

SO I'M THE ASSHOLE NOW? WOW [scoffs sarcastically] I'M THE ASSHOLE? YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT I'VE BEEN THROUGH JESS YOU JUST DON'T. HOW MANY SLEEPLESS NIGHTS I'VE HAD, HOW MANY COUNTLESS TIMES I'VE TRIED TO UNDERSTAND YOU WITHOUT GETTING ANYTHING BACK?

Cuts to over the shoulder shot of Jess

Cuts to a full shot where a majority of the office and both Jess and Adam can be seen, as Jess turns her back on Adam and storms out the door. Adam does not move - he is just looking at Jess, as she leaves, sorrowingly, as he wipes the stream of tears off his face.

Then cuts to a close up from a high angle of his face looking up, still while crying, as he yells out, to no one but himself.

ADAM:

FUCK.

-------------------------------------------------- END OF SCENE---------------------------------------------------

SCENE 2

SETTING: Bedroom/House - 1 week later in the morning

COSTUME:

Shot 1

Scene begins with a close up shot of Adams face as he sleeps. Shot then switches to close up of Adam's alarm ringing, and then switches to a medium close up of him from his bed, lifting his arm up and turning off the alarm. Camera then shows him waking up from bed, from a low angle, from the foot of his bed. He rubs his eyes as he slowly gets out and sits down on the edge of the bed. Shot then cuts to a close up of his face, as he puts his head in his hands.

Shot 2

Adam gets up and begins to walk out of his room. Camera tracks him & pans to reveal bottles of alcohol, cartons of cigarettes, clothes, and more lying around messily in his room. Adam then leaves and shuts the door behind the camera

Shot 3

Shot starts with a medium close up of Adam from the other side of the door. Camera then tracks him as he sluggishly walks to the kitchen and makes a cup of coffee, Adam then turns around and looks down. Shot switches to close up of Adam's face looking down from a low angle. Adam puts his hand on his forehead as he proceeds to mumble to himself.

ADAM:

(regretfully) God… what have I done…

Shot 4

Adam picks up his cup of coffee and starts to drink it as the camera starts to dolly towards him. He then looks down, dissatisfied. After this, a series of jump cuts are used to portray Adam showering, brushing his teeth, clothing himself, and getting ready to go to work.

The Opening

The goal of this opening scene is to introduce the audience to the character of Adam, and to illustrate the effects this initial breakup had on him. This will leave the audience with a conceptual idea in their minds as to the type of man Adam is, but will also try to build sympathy for his character. This opening acts as a precursor as to what's to come in the rest of the movie, as the opening explores the huge hit of sorrow that comes with heartbreak, while the rest of the film explores the ongoing struggles of forgetting someone you’ve loved for so long, even when equally as “great” opportunities may present themselves.

CONCEPT 2

MOONLIGHT SONATA

Genre: Drama/Romance

Note: This opening has been influenced by openings from movies like 500 Days of Summer (2009). Specifically, the movie's use of storytelling and hermeneutic code that pull the audience in as to what the main character will do, and what’s going to happen next. The handheld camera scene that portrays the main character when he was a child comes from the movie as well.

Synopsis

Hazel (___) has been captivated by the piano ever since he was 4 years old. What originally started as a burning passion however, slowly turned into a repetitive chore and nothing less than a burden. The blame lies on his mother (Hawila Eva), who took advantage of Hazel's natural talent and used him as a cash grab. Hazel’s life takes a turn for the better however when she meets Harmony (____), the girl that had just transferred to Hazel's school, who reignites Hazel's passion for the instrument.

  • Hazel is a bright kid, raised by a single mother, Hazel found interest in the piano ever since he was 4

  • His mom found out, was really happy

  • Eventually, she realized he was a prodigy

  • This made them want to take advantage, and push him to become the very best

  • This led to Hazel to form a hatred of playing the piano

  • However, right as he was about to quit, he meets a girl named

Opening

The aim of Moonlight Sonata's opening is to introduce the audience to our main character, Hazel. This is done by illustrating his love for the key plotpoint of the film, the piano. The main conflict can also be interpreted from the opening alone, which is, how he has lost all passion and joy in playing the instrument he once used to love. This hooks the audience in and allows them to speculate why this may have happened, and what he’s going to do in the future (hermeneutic code).

The opening features a clip from a hand recorded video that Dylan's mom took of him when he was just getting into piano at the age of 4. His joy-filled face is then juxtaposed by a match cut of him in the present day, of him playing the piano, but this time, with a dead and almost depressed facial expression.

                                                              CONCEPT 3

MR. FAHRENHEIT

Note: This opening has been inspired by openings of movies such as Baby Driver (2017), with its fast-paced editing, swift cinematography, and heavy use of narrative codes.

Synopsis

Dylan Fahernheit’s high school life started out as any other teen’s. After his parents divorced though, everything took a turn for the worse. Dylan now enjoys a life of drug abuse and addiction, as he seems to have lost every single friend he’s ever known. However, while contemplating suicide, an unfamiliar face asks him the question he's been yearning for someone to ask him all his life, “How are you?”.

  • Dylan used to be someone who loved life

  • Now he has fallen into a deep drug addiction that has ruined his life

  • He doesn't care about life or anything at all for that matter

  • But suddenly, a girl comes into his life, he makes him think that it might be worth living after all

Opening

Mr. Fahrenheit’s opening is a fast-paced opening featuring rapid cuts between shots of Dylan driving his car down the highway at super high speeds, while he's singing his lungs out to the Queen song he's blasting on the speakers. This opening tries to convey Dylan's overall carelessness for life, with subtle hints of his drug addiction being portrayed as well, with pills and syringes lying around the back of his car. He lives his life like he's prepared to die, and that's what we want the audience to feel. Hermeneutic code is applied and hooks the audience in by making them wonder who this character even is, as his name is not revealed, why he's driving down the highway super fast with music blasting, and what led him to this drug addiction. This pushes viewers to continue watching on.
